What’s the Best Grow Light for your Indoor Garden
For indoor gardeners, one of the most important things to consider is which grow light to use. With there being a lot of different options on the market today, some may not know which is the best option for their garden. With this, it is important to know what will suit best for your plants so we wanted to look at some of the options you have so you can pick one that will work best for you.
Before we discuss the different types of lights that you can chose from, you need to remember that there are factors that play key roles in a plant’s health and vegetative cultivation. These factors include spectrum type, length and intensity. When it comes to the health of your plants, one of the first things that you need to understand is the spectrum. Using different spectrum’s can cause various responses from plants and can help them grow. For example, blue light can induce vegetative growth while red light can bring about flowering. With this it is important to know what spectrum of light to use depending on your need. The next factor to consider is the intensity of the light. What you need to remember here is that plants need enough light to grow. Without enough light, the plants will need to stretch out to find more light resulting to elongated stems.
This is the reason why intensity should always be in the right amount depending on the plant types that you have. Lastly, is the duration of light. Most plants usually need around 20 hours of light and 4 hours of darkness during their vegetative growth phase. This is the best balance for light and darkness but it will depend on the type of plant you have. With you now knowing what to look for, we can take a look at some of the options you can consider for your grow light.
One type you may consider are fluorescent bulbs. Fluorescent bulbs are ideal for baby plants because of their low heat production. Some indoor gardeners use these types of lights because it is inexpensive and easy to use. This type of bulb also has a long life expectancy that is around 10-20 times compared to that of an incandescent bulb. The only down side of fluorescent bulbs is that they have narrow spectrum of cool light, which is not ideal if you want your plants to produce flowers.
The next type of light you can consider is the Metal Halide. Just like fluorescent bulbs, this type of lighting also
has a long life expectancy that is five times longer than incandescent. The disadvantages of using this light for your plants is that it uses too much power and it takes a long time to warm up.
A third option to consider is a LED grow light. This is the most preferred type beca use of its long life expectancy and efficiency. LEDs can also produce dual band color spectrum that is very good for the growth of your plants. It also produces minimal heat so you don’t have to worry about burning it.
For your garden you may also consider a High Pressure Sodium light (HPS). This is a good option to consider if you want your plants to flower and bear fruits as well as grow taller. The downside of this is that it does use a lot more
electricity as compared to LED lights, it doesn’t produce as much power and there is the potential of it burning your plant.
