The Complete List of LED Grow Lights Benefits: The Best Option For Indoor Plants

LED grow light in action

LED grow lights are becoming increasingly popular among indoor growers. Here are some of the most popular and crucial LED grow light advantages over other grow lights.

1. Increased Lifetime

Probably the biggest advantage of LED grow lights for cannabis is the increased lifetime of the bulbs. The light emitting diodes have very high efficiency and low energy use which leads them to lasting up to eleven years of continuous lighting or twenty-two hours of half-time operation. Compared to MH and HPS bulbs, LED bulbs have approximately around 85 000 more hours of lifespan. In addition, LED bulbs don’t stop working suddenly but slowly decrease in brightness, giving the consumer heads up in order to prepare for change. Due to most LED panel’s modular build, a grower is able to swap out the old LEDs for new ones and keep on growing.

In an indoor environment where constant lighting is important, it is a big advantage to have long lifetime of the bulbs because this ensures less frequent maintenance service time and cost.

2. Energy saving

LED light bulbs produce the same amount of light as HID lights but consume fewer watts. This makes them the best grow lights for electricity savings. A testing in the efficiency between the High Pressure Sodium (HPS) lamps and the LED lighting bulbs showed that LEDs decrease energy consumption by 40%.

Low heat, more light

LED grow lighting emits far less heat than the lighting methods of other grow lights which is of great importance for the plant grow – too much heat can be damaging to the plants, and decrease their growth and lifetime.

The higher efficiency of light and low heat of LED grow lights caters to the plants needs for growing and blossoming.

Require less power, highly efficient

3. Еаsily controllable

There is an increasing number of LED grow lights which include spectrum, dimming and scheduling control in into the product technology.

Spectrum control

Spectral control is the possibility of each of the panel’s spectrum to be independently controlled. Traditional grow bulbs spectrum is single and cannot be manipulated, while the different colors of LED grow lights (reds, blues, and whites) can now be turned on or off in different combinations, depending on the grow stage and requirements of the strains.

Dimming control

The dimming control enables the grower to customize the proportion of wavelengths transmitted to the plants since many LED grow lights are dimmable from 1% to 100% intensity. Sometimes full intensity is not required which means that the grower may, again, make a different combination of the lights – for example dim the blues by a certain percentage, and use the full percentage of reds and whites, or to dim all the channels to a certain percentage, depending on the growing stage of the plants.

Another available feature of the LEDs is the scheduling/timing of the lights, allowing the grower to program the spectrum and dimming schedules. This allows for a manual choice of the spectrum and intensity for each hour of the day.

4. Lower HVAC costs

As mentioned above, LEDs require less amount of watts to deliver the same amount of light as other grow lights which means that they will also have lower operating HVAC costs. According to growers, a reduction of 50% of the air conditioning costs has occurred after switching to LED grow lights. Bigger grow rooms will require less air conditioning, and smaller spaces may even consider removing the air conditioning setup entirely – LEDs low heat may lead to obtaining perfect grow temperatures even without the air conditioning system.

5. Easy to Install

The LED grow lights are very easy to installed, especially in smaller grow rooms. Their design is “all-in-one-package” and requires for the light to be simply plugged in, hung up, and for the grower to assure airflow and stable temperatures. Growers don’t have to worry about hanging reflectors or about the grow space overheating.

6. Waterproof and dustproof

Many LED grow lights offer the advantage of waterproof and dustproof. The code, expressing that, is called the Ingress-Protection code, or IP. The code IP65 stands for indicating that the product is “dust tight” (6) and can be splashed or sprayed with water. There are different types of water-proof LED lights, some less watertight than others.

7. Recyclable

In difference of HPS and MH bulbs which contain mercury and release toxic vapors when break, LED grow lights are considered the safest option among grow lights. They are not entirely metal-free, do not contain mercury and their light diodes are very small, without the risk of breaking.
