Ways to Avoid Killing a Houseplant
If you have ever owned a houseplant, there is a good chance that some of them might of accidentally died while under your care. Even it was not your intention, houseplants can die due to some of things you do when taking care of it. For me, I don’t know how many times I’ve tried to take care of a plant and then have something go wrong and it dying. If you own or want to have a houseplant in your home, these are some things that you can do to make sure it stays healthy.
One of the more important things that you have to do is making sure you don’t over-water your plants as this is one of the more common ways you can kill them. To avoid this, you should research the water needs of your plants. Knowing how much to give a plant will depend on many different factors such as the type of plant that you have. If you water your plants too much, the roots will start to decay and form fungi, which can stop your plants from absorbing the essential nutrients that they need.
Another thing that you need to do to help avoid killing a healthy houseplant is to ensure that they are not placed in areas where temperatures tend to fluctuate. Temperature fluctuations can stress out your plants and could lead to killing them. You should place your plants away from heaters, fireplaces and open vents and try to place them in an area with a stable temperature.
If you are using fertilizer, make sure that you don’t use to much, especially if you are using chemical-based fertilizers. Most people think that all plants need fertilizer to grow healthy, but the truth is most plants can survive without it. If you regularly use too much fertilizer, it can have a serious effect on the pH levels of the soil, which could be deadly for them.
You should also remember that the space where you put them could also lead to your plants not growing healthily.
Your plants should not be crammed in undersized containers as it will be hard for the plant to absorb the right amount of nutrients. The size of the container that you should use will depend on the type of plant that you have.
Smaller plants can use smaller containers while bigger plants should be put in larger containers.
You should also always remember to provide proper lighting for your plants. One of the easier ways to do this is
by using the light coming from the sun by putting your plants next to a window. If this is not possible, you can always use artificial light such as a LED grow light.
These are just some simple ways to avoid killing a houseplant and making sure that they stay healthy.
