Choosing The Orchid that Best Fits Your Growing Conditions

One of the first big decisions that you will have to make is what type of orchid you want to grow. Before choosing the type of orchid that you want, you need to assess first and foremost the growing conditions in your house that include things like humidity, watering tendencies, temperature and light. If this is your first time taking care of a plant, one type of orchid that you should consider is the Moth orchid. Also known as, Phalaenopsis orchids, this type of orchid is easy to maintain, quite quickly and the flowers of this type of orchid can last for months depending on how well you take care of it.

The Best Environment for Your Orchids

When it comes to humidity, most orchids can survive in a humid environment. A majority of the orchids that we see in the market come from tropical countries so they are usually very accustomed to humid weather. If you want to boost the growth of your orchids, you may need to increase the humidity in the area where you are growing the plant. One way you can do this is by grouping your plants together.

Watering Your Orchids

For the watering of your orchids, you need to remember that their water requirement is different as compared to other plants. Orchids that are not planted in soil, but in a bark mix should be watered once a week while for the other types they should be watered every 4 to 5 days. Basically, there are many things to consider when it comes to watering your orchids such as the type, light, kind of pot, humidity type of potting mix, and air temperature. As for the temperature, the requirement will depend on the type of orchid that you have, however in most cases, orchids can adapt well in different temperature ranges.

Orchids and Fertilizers

If you are thinking of putting fertilizer in your orchid, you should know that orchids could grow well even without the use of fertilizers. If you are using fertilizer, you need to make sure to deliver water to the plant without fertilizer so it will have a chance to flush out the excess fertilizer.
